Planning special events whether it be a bridal shower, baby shower, girls birthday party, fundraiser or just a fun day out for the girls can be difficult to organize particularly if you have yet to find a venue.

Summer has arrived, which is typically the heaviest time for these types of events, particularly bridal showers. My wife and I were married in August 2006 on the beach. The beach was a phenomenal venue to exchange our vows. The guests really enjoyed it too, but there are so many other events prior to a wedding that are also fun, like the bridal shower.

My wife and her friends wanted something calm, relaxing and accommodating, a place where they could sit and talk, uninterrupted by outside distractions. They also wanted something unique that would really create a nice memory because you only get to do your bridal shower once.

After researching, my wife’s friends came across a true hidden gem, the Tea Garden of Eve in Rancho Cucamonga. This family owned operation is truly one-of-a-kind, a place for memorable experiences and quaint respites from a hard day’s work.

Obviously, the Tea Garden offers a fantastic variety of tea but also other beverages like soft drinks, coffee, juice and lemonade. The food menu we consider to be a lighter fare, perfect with a cup of tea and ranges from sandwiches to salads and a great dessert menu of cheesecake, scones, fresh fruit and more.

Although the Tea Garden has a great menu, the atmosphere is more like being at home with full service than being at a restaurant. That is, if your home has fountains, chirping birds, flowering lattice archways and a perfectly assembled dining area. The environment is a true escape for anyone that can easily consume half a day or more.

Faerie Tale Tea Garden

So, the first visit to the Tea Garden of Eve was for a bridal shower but since that visit we’ve connected with others in the community and had baby showers, girl’s day/night out, and even girls birthday parties.

The Tea Garden for a girls birthday party venue is a unique idea in that it is not your typical loud, running around type of event but rather, a place where young girls have the opportunity to dress up a bit, interact with their friends in a different way and even learn some proper etiquette. The Tea Garden offers classes specifically for table etiquette but also incorporates proper etiquette in their parties and other events. This is something rarely seen today and truly unique. We consider it to be one of those must-have kids activities for the Summer.

Beyond catering to events like Mother’s Day, fundraisers, church groups, bridal and baby showers, the Tea Room also creates special events throughout the year.

This Summer the Tea Room is working with Windsor Cottage in a special Webkinz Tea event, which is June 14 at Noon. Webkinz pets are very popular now and include a stuffed animal and access code to play educationally interactive games on the web. This event provides the opportunity for you and your kids to bring your webkinz pet dressed in its favorite outfit and enjoy tea and food at the Tea Garden.

Seating for this event is extremely limited though they are working on additional event times. If you can’t make it to this event the Tea Garden will be hosting Faerie Tale Teas Sunday, July 13 at 3:30pm. Again advanced reservation is necessary as seating is limited.

The Tea Garden of Eve in Rancho Cucamonga is our favorite pick for many events from Bridal showers to girl’s birthday parties but also to take a break and relax for a couple of hours.

Summer is here, unofficially marked by Memorial Day weekend and blistering heat in many cities that exceeded 105 degrees.

Summer also marks the end of school and the beginning of the kids being at home full-time. This increased time at home means parents need to be prepared with a range of indoor and outdoor activities to keep the kids busy.

We always suggest that parents keep a short list of these activities, which range from indoor arts and crafts to sports camps that typically last 1-2 weeks. If you aren’t traveling this year, which most families are not due to the economy, you’ll need to pad your list a bit and come up with some more creative ideas for the kids.

This Summer we’ve planned on a number of set activities. Our son will be involved in a one week basketball camp. Our daughter is taking weekly piano and harp lessons. The two of them will also be taking kids gym classes for about a week.

With our current plan we’re consuming about 2 weeks of the Summer so there is much left to fill-in.

When I was young, Summer was a time for activities but some of my best memories were our frequent trips to the ice cream store. There was simply nothing better at the end of a hot day than some fantastic ice cream. It was also great bonding time for the family though I didn’t realize that until I had my own kids.

But things have changed significantly in the last 25 years when it comes to kid’s treats. Many companies have made moves to a lighter fare with less sugar and fat. The general consensus is that we (and our kids) just don’t need it. Our shopping habits are certainly consistent with this movement but the reality is that kids still want treats and there are options for healthy ones that also taste great.

Call it a guiltless treat, frozen yogurt has come a long way and re-emerged as the most popular Summertime treat. If you haven’t tried the new frozen yogurt stores, now is the time because the products today taste nothing like they did a decade ago. I will venture to say the frozen yogurt we now eat 2-3 times per week easily rivals in satisfaction to its fat and sugar laden counterpart, ice cream. Give me a choice between mint chocolate chip ice cream and mint frozen yogurt with chocolate sprinkles and I’ll take the frozen yogurt every time. Not only does it taste as good, you also don’t leave with a heavy feeling in your stomach.

You can also feel good about giving this frozen treat to your kids. Beyond the obvious reduction in calories fat and sugar, they also get the benefit of protein, calcium and better digestion from active cultures. We also started adding fresh fruit to our frozen yogurt orders. We’ll mix it up with strawberries, blackberries and pineapple. Occasionally we go for the yogurt chips or other fun toppings.

Our favorite frozen yogurt store is Golden Spoon and although we have another shop that’s closer it’s easily worth the 10-15 minute drive, plus our kids won’t eat anything else.

Frozen yogurt Summertime treats are great for rewarding the days activities and staying cool but also keeping healthy and creating memorable bonding time with your kids. We’ve made a habit of it.
