Memorial Day, formerly known as “Decoration Day” has always been the unofficial start to Summer. It became a federal holiday in 1971 to honor lost lives in all of the nation’s conflicts.

Families have traditionally taken this three day weekend to cook out, travel to the lake, beach or other favorite spot, but this year could be the exception due to the high cost of gas and the overall economy. Many families will opt to stay in town and celebrate at home or search for other local activities and places to eat.

Montclair and the surrounding area has much to offer when it comes to Memorial Day, Summer activities, places to eat and fun things to do for the kids.  But our overall favorite has always been John’s Incredible Pizza.  Here’s why:

First, we like a place where we can spend a substantial amount of time without spending too much money.  John’s offers an all-you-can-eat buffet of pizza, pasta, salad and even desserts.  Drinks are an extra, single charge then you can drink as much has you want.  They do serve alcohol but there is a 2 drink maximum and there is an additional charge.  The food alone makes it worth it but there’s much more.

Second, the fun area is an all-indoor amusement park that is fun for kids AND parents with rides, games and even indoor glow golf!  Our favorite continues to be the bumper cars but the kids love everything.

Last, parties and events are always fun at John’s so it’s a place to consider for your next birthday get together or even corporate function.

A trip to John’s Incredible Pizza Co. with the family is the perfect way to spend a Summer day or even as an alternative to traveling this Memorial Day weekend!

The recession has affected everyone, right down to our mail carrier who informed me yesterday that his house had fallen to foreclosure.  Some of our favorite small businesses are no longer open and even our favorite restaurants are reducing open hours.

In our opinion, the doom and gloom coming from the media doesn’t help the situation.  It seems to further erode confidence, which obviously isn’t good for any economy.

When it comes to kids, they probably don’t know any different.  I certainly don’t remember bad times in the early 80’s though that was supposed to be a tougher recession than the on we’re in now.  Maybe it’s just that my parents didn’t say much about it or the industries they worked in were not affected.  In any event, it’s not good for kids to sense anything is wrong.  This doesn’t mean to shelter them from reality, but rather, to keep finding ways to have fun.  Fun is good for the kids and the adults.

We’re constantly searching for fun places to go with the kids while also keeping an eye on the cost. Disneyland is out of the question, though we do love it and will go back when times are a little better. What’s our top choice during this recession?  John’s Incredible Pizza in Montclair is great for the kids and the adults who might need more of a break than the kids to at this point!

While driving around town today, my husband and I reminisced of the days when we’d go out together – just

the two of us – to someplace like Dave and Busters and have a drink and play video games.  House of the Dead was our favorite, and having those date nights really kept us connected and our romance ignited.  

These days, with three kids in tow, we have little time together and the last time we went on a date was probably for our anniversary.  We love our kids and go to great lengths to make sure they are involved in enriching activities.  All of our plans and outings are geared towards them, and while this is great family time, we need to remember to make time for ourselves to keep our relationship strong. 

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to rekindle that flame and plan a special evening out with your sweetheart.  We typically choose a convenient night the week of and then coordinate a babysitter for the kids.  Fortunately, our kids get to hang out with their grandparents, so we know they’ll have a great time.  Since it seems like my kids have perpetual separation anxiety – especially when they know I’ve got something planned that doesn’t include them – I try to arrange a special day out for them, as well.  This makes for a welcome and easy transition, which any babysitter can appreciate.  

Having a fun time planned for the kids while you’re out is easy and can be anything you know will get them excited!  Maybe have them pick out a new movie to watch with popcorn in a mock sleepover party.  Board games, hide and seek, or ice cream sundaes can keep them happy and occupied which means more time out with your Valentine.
